Can you offer five pieces of advice you would give to your younger self?

  • Believe in yourself. You are worthy.
  • Live in the moment because time goes by so fast.

  • Always wear sunscreen.
  • Lay off the Diet CokeđŸ€Ș

Tell us five things that most people do not know about you.

  • I’m bilingual—Spanish/English. I initially wanted to learn French. So, I took two years of French in high school and two in college. But I can’t speak it.
  • I’m in a fantasy football league.
  • I love to sew. I loved designing my daughter’s Halloween costumes.
  • I love comedies. The stupider, the better.

What is your most favorite concert you have gone to? How heavily does music influence your writing?

I’ve been to a lot of great concerts, but my all-time favorite would be Pearl Jam. They are amazing live.

Music is everything to me and I constantly listen to music when I write or plot ideas. Songs and lyrics definitely give me inspiration and many times set a tone for the book.

First ten songs that show up in your shuffle.

  • “Hong Kong Garden”—Siouxsie and the Banshees
  • “Shape of Things to Come”—Audioslave
  • “Lullaby”—The Cure
  • “The Resistance”—Drake
  • “T.G.I.F.”—Kid Cudi
  • “We Never Change”—Coldplay
  • “No, You Don’t”—Nine Inch Nails
  • “Around the World”—Daft Punk
  • “Somebody that I Used to Know”—Gotye
  • “Jeremy’s Storm”—Tame Impala

Quote you live by?

I live My life a quarter mile at a time.

Does one of the main characters hold a special place in your heart? If so, why?

I love all my characters, but two of my faves are Vicente and Emilio Mendoza because they are pure gritty alphas who will do anything for their loved ones.

What is the key theme and/or message in the book?

We will survive and overcome, no matter the odds.

What do you hope your readers take away from this book?

Hope and you can succeed no matter the odds. And I hope they fall in love with the Mendoza’s.

What books or authors have most influenced your own writing?

Judith McNaught, Johanna Lindsey and Charlaine Harris are the first authors that made me fall in love with this genre.

Favorite quote (does not matter the source)

“Life could be hard. Life could be brutal. Life could be unforgiving. But at the end of the day, life could be wonderful if you fought for what is important. “

—Primitivo

What’s your favorite food?

Pizza. Of course.

Ask An Author–The Recluse Heir by Monique Moreau

Monique Moreau

Tell us 5 things that most people don’t know about you.

Most people don’t know that I was a Peace Corps volunteer in Madagascar, East Africa. Other things that are not commonly known is that I suffer from fibromyalgia, a chronic disease, that I only got my driver’s license when I was forty years old, that I am a huge fan of old black-and-white movies, and that I have a thing for Indian jewelry.

How do you deal with the emotional impact of a book (on yourself) as you are writing the story?

I had this come up when I was writing my third book, Loki’s Luck. Loki, the hero of the story, was dealing with survivor’s guilt because his younger brother committed suicide. I had something similar happen to me, which is what prompted me to write about it. I had to step away from writing scenes when it got too emotional for me. I’d go for a walk or watch Netflix to get my mind off the emotions building inside of me. When I felt calmer, I’d go back to writing. I did this several times while writing that book.

What is the significance of the title?

The title of this book is the Recluse Heir. Each book in this series has the word “Heir” repeated in it because I want the titles to be recognizably linked together. The word “Recluse” is meant to reflect Luca, specifically. He has always felt himself to be apart from the rest of his brothers because of the way his father treated him throughout his life. He often found himself as the scapegoat for his father’s rage and reacted by becoming defiant. He is also a loner, a man who finds solace in spending time in his own company. Combining those traits, I came up with the word “recluse” to best describe him. Thus came, the “Recluse Heir.”

If you had to describe Luca and Cat (separately) in three words, what would those three words be?

This is an easy one because I did an extensive storyboard for both of these characters. Luca can be described as a loner, domineering, and intense. Cat is best described as steadfast, perceptive and intelligent, with a touch of irreverence.

Who is the author you most admire in your genre?

In the genre of mafia romance, Cora Reilly has been most inspiring for me. One of the things I love most about her books is the sense of family that she creates. I feel she does this best in The Camorra Chronicles because it is a small band of brothers who are tight and bonded over their shared traumatic past. Of those books, I think Twisted Pride is my favorite. Remo is a true anti-hero, an unredeemable man who somehow finds himself having feelings for someone outside of his family. Despite the growth he goes through, he remains, till the end, unrepentant.

Favorite quote (doesn’t matter the source):

One of my favorite quotes is from the Irish poet Yeats:

‘Let us go forth, the tellers of tales, and seize whatever prey the heart longs for, and have no fear.

Everything exists, everything is true, and the earth is only a little dust under our feet.’

What was your dream job when you were younger?

When I was younger, I wanted to be a painter and artist. My parents had other expectations of me, so I did not pursue it for long after college and went to law school instead.

What is the best part of your day?

The morning is my favorite time of day. I am most productive in the morning. My husband and I wake up before our kids so we either talk or work together in silence, which is sooo peaceful.

Breck

My name is Brecklyn Brannon, and I’m not who I claim to be.

A year ago, I packed up my promising life in the city for a man I saw only once.

Accepting a temporary job with Cade and four blazing hot veterans should have been my way in.

Except, Cade acts like he would rather be tortured than speak to me.

He can resist all he wants, but I made a promise that I intend to keep.

Even if it costs me everything.

Cade

I’ve watched her for over a year.

There’s something about her that seems familiar
but now that she’s living here for two weeks, I could care less what it is.

I just want her gone.

Breck is temptation personified, and some lines can’t be crossed.

I’m Major Cade Jameson, and I made a promise, too.

One that I can’t break.

No matter how hard it gets.

About the Author:

A self-proclaimed reader enthusiast, Kristy started her writing journey back in 2009, reading and writing when her daughter was napping. Establishing her place in Corporate America (because something had to pay the bills), writing became her dirty, late-night secret.

After eight long years, she released her debut novel, Commander in Briefs. It was a long road, but she can honestly say, the road less traveled had the most beautiful sights.

The only thing Kristy Marie loves as much as reading and writing is sports! Especially those that require muscles and a nice ass. Her favorite is, and always will be, baseball. She’s such a fan, that she even married her small town’s high school’s centerfielder where they still live with their three badass kids.

Commander in Briefs is her first series but definitely not her last.

Mary Persephone Hail

Mary—well-wished-for child.

Persephone—destruction.

Hail—well that speaks for itself.

Her name is painful to think about. Mary, his newfound daughter, isn’t a wished-for child.  Persephone, though?  Yeah, destruction is a fitting description. And Hail?  Yeah, that’s just the final f-you.

The moment that her mother drops her off on his doorstep, Dante’s hell becomes complete.

Or so he thinks.

What can make life worse after losing one’s wife and kids, you ask?  Here’s what: being given a baby that depends on him for her survival.  Finding out that the baby’s mother is dying of brain cancer, and has a husband that he never knew about. A husband that Dante knows in the marrow of his bones is trying to kill her just as surely as the cancer eating her brain.

Dante’s a bad person.  He’s done some not so nice things, and now he’s being punished for his misdeeds.  Karma is finally catching up to him.

This child that he’s been stuck with is of his flesh and bone. This child is his salvation. This child is the final nail in the coffin of his wife and daughters’ too short lives.

He doesn’t want this child.

But this child will save him whether he wants her to or not.

With the help of a friend—yes, a woman friend—Dante finds his way back to life.  But what he finds when he gets back isn’t the same life that he left behind.  Turns out, he has to start living a new one. One where he’s suddenly having feelings for a friend that helped him get through some tough times, and loving a daughter that won’t let him quit.
